
A 2400 × 3000 pixel image at 300 pixels per inch measures 8 × 10 inches. At 200 pixels per inch, the same pixels cover 12 × 15 inches.
The calculation
Printed inches = pixels ÷ chosen pixels per inch
Printed millimeters = printed inches × 25.4

Changing the selected pixels-per-inch value in this calculation does not create or delete pixels. It tells you how large the existing pixel grid would be when spread across that many inches.
Compare two sizes using the same image

These are dimension examples, not quality ratings. The formula cannot assess focus, compression artifacts, subject detail, paper, ink or viewing distance. A larger pixel count does not repair an already blurred image.
Calculate what a target size requires
Reverse the formula: target inches × selected PPI = required pixels. A 6 × 8 inch image at 300 PPI corresponds to 1800 × 2400 pixels. At 200 PPI, those same dimensions correspond to 1200 × 1600 pixels.
Keep aspect ratio in mind. A 2400 × 3000 image has a 4:5 ratio. A 6 × 8 inch frame has a 3:4 ratio. Uniform resizing alone cannot make both edges match: you must leave space, crop some content or change the image’s proportions.
Keep image size separate from sheet size
An 8 × 10 inch image is smaller than an 8.5 × 11 inch sheet. Centered at its calculated size, it leaves 0.25 inches on each side and 0.5 inches at the top and bottom. Whether your printer can reproduce that area depends on its printable margins.
Do not interpret this calculator as a printer-resolution setting. It models image pixels per inch. Always check the final print preview and a sample when the exact result matters.
Check a common frame mismatch
An 8 × 10 inch image fits a 6 × 8 inch opening at 6 × 7.5 inches, leaving space vertically. Filling the opening instead gives 6.4 × 8 inches before cropping. The 6 × 8 worked example shows the corresponding pixel crop and why stretching is different.
Compare common pixel dimensions at a target PPI
Use the actual pixel dimensions of your file, rather than its file size in megabytes. These examples assume the whole image is printed without cropping or resampling.

For a frame with a different ratio, calculate the crop first. A 3000 × 4000 image does not fill an 8 × 10 frame without cropping. Increasing the PPI value in a file’s metadata alone does not create new detail. Keep the original image so that a later crop does not start from an already reduced copy.
