
A 2400 × 3000 image has a 4:5 ratio. A 6 × 8 inch frame has a 3:4 ratio. To preserve proportions, you must either leave unused space or remove some image content.
Option 1: fit the entire image
Keep the full image and match its width to 6 inches. The corresponding height is 6 × 3000 ÷ 2400 = 7.5 inches. In a 6 × 8 inch opening, that leaves 0.5 inches of total vertical space, or 0.25 inches at both the top and bottom when centered.
This option is useful when all the image content must remain visible. The space does not have to be white, but adding a colored background or a border is a design decision, not part of the image-sizing calculation.
Option 2: fill the frame and crop
Match the image height to 8 inches. Its width becomes 8 × 2400 ÷ 3000 = 6.4 inches. Filling the 6 inch opening removes 0.4 inches of width in total. A centered crop removes 0.2 inches from each side.
At the pixel level, retaining the full 3000 pixel height at a 3:4 ratio requires a width of 2250 pixels. The original 2400 pixel width therefore loses 150 pixels, or 75 pixels per side for a centered crop. An off-center crop can preserve an important subject close to one edge.
Separate cropping from resampling
The cropped 2250 × 3000 image at 6 × 8 inches has 375 pixels per inch in both directions. To create exactly 300 PPI at those dimensions, the output would be 1800 × 2400 pixels. Cropping chooses the field of view; resampling changes the pixel grid. They are distinct operations.
Do not stretch the original image independently to 6 × 8 inches unless you deliberately accept changed proportions. Circles can become ovals and familiar objects can look distorted.
Check what the frame actually reveals
A nominal frame size may not describe the visible opening after overlap by a mount or retaining edge. Measure the opening and keep important content clear of that boundary. The math assumes an exact 6 × 8 inch visible rectangle; substitute your measured dimensions if they differ.

Compare 4 × 6, 5 × 7 and 11 × 14 prints
Take the same portrait 2400 × 3000 image. A centered crop preserves the target ratio by removing equal amounts from opposite edges. Fractional pixels below describe ideal geometry; an image editor must round crop boundaries to whole pixels.

Choosing Fit instead retains all 2400 × 3000 pixels. At 5 inches wide, the whole image is 6.25 inches high, leaving 0.375 inches above and below in a 5 × 7 area. At 11 inches wide, it is 13.75 inches high, leaving 0.125 inches at each end in an 11 × 14 area. Check which trade-off protects your subject and captions.
