Use a simple two-up layout when you want two independent pages on each side of a sheet. Use booklet order when the sheets will be nested and folded into a readable sequence.
Start with what happens after printing
Two small planner inserts that you will cut apart do not need the same ordering as a folded booklet. Sketch where the first four numbered pages must end up. If the final pages will be separate leaves, your cutting and front/back pairing determine the layout. If they will remain folded together, the outside and inside pages must be paired.
Adobe’s Booklet printing arranges pages for folding and offers automatic or manual two-sided output, depending on printer support. Check its preview and binding choice before printing. The page-pair example below explains why that order differs from simple sequential two-up printing.
Work through an eight-page booklet
For an eight-page, left-bound booklet made from two nested sheets, the outside spread pairs page 8 with page 1. Its reverse pairs page 2 with page 7. The inner sheet pairs 6 with 3 on one side and 4 with 5 on the other. These are spread pairs, not universal instructions for reloading your paper tray.

Each folded sheet contributes four page faces. If the desired page count is not a multiple of four, account for blank faces. Make a folded pencil-numbered dummy first when a cover or intentionally blank page changes the sequence.
Check the physical page dimensions
Two A5 rectangles side by side use 296 × 210 mm. A landscape A4 sheet is 297 × 210 mm, leaving just 1 mm of total width and no spare height. That nominal fit does not reserve space for printer margins or a gutter.
Two Half Letter rectangles side by side use 279.4 × 215.9 mm, exactly the dimensions of landscape Letter. Again, edge-to-edge geometry leaves no extra printer margin. A layout with blank outer space may print its useful content, while a full border may clip or trigger shrinking.
Test four pages before the whole document
Use numbered pages with a clear top marker. Inspect sequence, orientation, front/back pairing and final dimensions. A job can have the right order while producing inserts that are slightly too small. For independent cut inserts, also check that the reverse of each leaf has the intended content after cutting.
Use the paper reference sheet to compare dimensions and the scale test to check a precise measurement. Do not use the single-page calculator to infer booklet page order; it models one rectangle only.
